About Us
Steve Brown and his wife Lynda also ran their own business where they developed skills in marketing, mentoring and helping people getting started in their own business. This gave Steve a lot of experience in business development, public speaking and accountancy. During which time he realised “that small businesses’ spend too much time carrying out administration duties and employing staff. Rather than concentrating on the real reason they got into running their own business in the first place”.
Steve took redundancy/retirement after a Company takeover and now wishes to use his own and his daughters experience to deliver very high quality service to their customers. This will allow businesses to concentrate on their core skills and outsourcing the task of bookkeeping to a tried and tested Friendly Rosemary System®.
With now 7 years with the Rosemary Franchise with continuous growth in excess of 35% year on year growth. 3 Rosemary Franchise of the Year and a National Award The British Franchise Association Olderpreneur of the Year 2016
Steve likes spending time with 5 grandchildren, going on holidays. He is also a keen Formula 1 fan and enjoys taking care of the beautiful pond with lots of fish – in his garden!
TJ Sutherland runs the Rosemary Bookkeeping business in Basingstoke and surrounding areas with Steve. TJ started her career in Finance working as a Financial Controller for a refrigeration and air conditioning company. During her time there she was responsible for three companies where she carried out many duties such as the day to day running of the business, credit control and PAYE – just to mention a few. She also gained qualifications in Sage and Basic Bookkeeping. After a number of years she diversified that company into Vending where she quickly realised that she enjoyed not only Finance but Sales and building customer relationships. Leaving there she became a Sales Co-ordinator for a number of companies including a Recruitment Software Company and a global manufacturing company.
In 2002, TJ started as an IT Recruitment Consultant where she built her own client base and quickly progressed to Senior Consultant and hit her first car target within her first year. This was done by building relationships with not only companies but candidates also looking for work. TJ was honest and personable and genuinely valued her customers – to this day she still has an excellent reputation in the market place.
During her maternity leave, TJ was searching for a position that would enable her to have a good work/life balance. Running her own business and working from home in a family business allows her to do this and the Rosemary franchise fitted her criteria.
With 7 years running a Rosemary Franchise now with 5 Staff to help also winning a number of Rosemary Awards including Rosemary Franchise of the Year
TJ is married and lives with her husband Andy and 2 daughters and in her spare time enjoys running, cycling and cooking.

Making tax digital
What is making Tax Digital?
At Budget 2015, the government set out its vision for a transformed tax system, and in December 2015 it published the Making Tax Digital roadmap. This set out the government’s plans to make fundamental changes to the tax system – transforming tax administration by 2020 so it is more effective, more efficient, and simpler for taxpayers.
What does this actually mean?
From April 2019, VAT registered businesses (including self-employed and landlords) with a turnover above the VAT registration threshold (currently £85,000) have to:
- keep their VAT records digitally
- provide their VAT return information to HMRC through Making Tax Digital compatible software.
For other businesses the implementation date will be delayed until at least 2020, but that is not far away so consider getting prepared now.
Rosemary Bookkeeping work with a variety of MTD compatible software providers, so we can find just the right solution for your company.
What are the advantages of going digital?
Digital accounting software has significant advantages over the traditional ways of bookkeeping.
Imagine if you could:
- See a clear picture of your current financial position, in real-time;
- Have your accounts 100% online, so there’s no software to install and everything is backed up automatically. Updates are free and instantly available;
- Avoid upfront accounting software costs – upgrades, maintenance, system administration costs and server failures are no longer an issue;
- Have your bank feed your data directly into your accounts on a DAILY basis;
- Take a photo on your phone of a purchase invoice and it was posted automatically; AND
- See your results, who owes you money, who you owe to and your business bank balance 24/7, 365 from your phone.
What software can I use?
Most main stream accounting packages will be Making Tax Digital compliant, Rosemary Bookkeeping work with most of them, if you already use a compliant accounting package we can work with you to get your records ready and up to date or we can help you decide on which is the right package for your business. See our Software page for more detail about the accounting packages we work with on a regular basis.

Doing your bookkeeping online?
Using a cloud accounting/software system? How confident are you that your VAT return is right? Do you know when you can claim VAT? When you can’t?

- Can you claim VAT on meals?
- Can you claim VAT on train fares?

If you aren’t confident about the answers, then you shouldn’t be submitting your VAT Return to HMRC without it being checked by a reliable, knowledgeable bookkeeper.
